Safer Results with Ultrasound-Guided Filler Dissolving
Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are an excellent way to address volume loss with aging as well as improve hydration and enhance facial features. However, dermal fillers may migrate, change and form small bumps as the body tries to dissolve the product on its own. Over time, some people may electively choose to dissolve their facial fillers if they no longer desire the look or if they develop swelling or small bumps. Over time, many people are choosing to have their filler dissolved after learning more about its long-term effects. While filler is often thought to last 1–2 years, in reality, it can stay in the body much longer. As it ages, it can become firmer, break down unevenly, and even move from its original placement. This can lead to puffiness, lumpiness, or an overfilled look.
If you’re ready for a softer, more natural appearance—or simply want to start fresh—filler dissolving may be the right option for you.

What is Ultrasound Guided Filler Dissolving?
Ultrasound imaging allows your provider to see exactly where filler is located—its depth, placement, and proximity to blood vessels. This technology makes the dissolving process significantly safer and more precise.
At Skinnovations, our providers prioritize patient safety and precision. We believe ultrasound-guided injections and dissolving provide the highest standard of care, ensuring safe, accurate results while minimizing complications.
Many patients choose to dissolve filler for a variety of reasons, including:
-
Changing trends: You may simply prefer a more natural look again.
-
Filler migration: Over time, filler can move from its original placement—for example, lip filler may migrate above the lip line or cheek filler may shift downward.
-
Overfilled appearance: Gradually adding filler can sometimes create a puffy or unnatural look.
-
Lumps or bumps: Filler placed too close to the surface can appear uneven, especially under the eyes or in the lips.
-
Complications: In rare cases, filler can cause nodules, infections, or vascular issues.
-
Vascular occlusion (urgent): If filler blocks a blood vessel, it must be dissolved immediately to prevent tissue damage.
Some patients only want a small amount dissolved to soften their look, while others prefer to remove all filler and start fresh. During your consultation, we’ll discuss your goals and design a treatment plan that aligns with your desired outcome.
Only hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers—such as Juvederm, Restylane, or Versa—can be dissolved using Hyaluronidase, an enzyme that breaks down HA safely and effectively.
Other types of fillers, like Bellafill (silicone), Sculptra, and Radiesse, cannot be dissolved with this method.
Some HA fillers, like Juvederm, may require more time or multiple sessions to dissolve due to their thicker consistency and stronger crosslinking.
Research has shown that Hylenex, a brand of Hyaluronidase available in the U.S., works especially well for dissolving filler.
If you’ve had multiple syringes placed over the years, it can take multiple ultrasound-guided treatments to completely remove the filler. Because filler often spreads in small amounts under the skin, full removal can be challenging—but noticeable improvement is typically achieved with each session.
Results are typically noticeable within a few days. Mild swelling or redness may occur and usually subsides within 1–3 days, revealing smoother, more natural contours and a refreshed appearance.

Possible Side Effects
Side effects are generally mild and temporary, with most patients experiencing only minimal discomfort. You may notice slight swelling, redness, or itching at the injection site, and in some cases, mild bruising or tenderness. These effects typically resolve on their own within a few days.
Allergic reactions are very rare (less than 1%), but those with bee sting allergies should let us know before treatment. Using ultrasound helps us avoid blood vessels and minimize bruising.
Why Choose Ultrasound for Aesthetic Treatments?
Anna Wicklund, NP, believes that ultrasound is essential for accurate and safe procedures. This translates directly into her aesthetic practice. Ultrasound allows for:
-
Safer filler placement (avoiding arteries and reducing risk of complications)
-
More effective filler dissolving (targeting only the areas that need it)
-
Ability to manage and treat more complex patients with past aesthetic procedures.
At Skinnovations, your safety and natural beauty are always the top priorities.
