What Causes Hair Loss—and How Can Microneedling with PDGF Help?

In men, we know that hair loss follows a very specific, progressive pattern that is passed on through heredity and is triggered by hormone-specifically dihydrotestosterone or DHT. An estimated 60 million American men are suffering from male pattern hair loss. As hair follicles miniaturize and weaken, coverage of the scalp diminishes, leaving thinning or balding areas.

In contrast, hair thinning in women, which affects nearly 40 million American women, is mainly due to heredity and can start at any time after puberty. However, we also know that female pattern hair loss can be strongly influenced by age, nutrition, stress, surgery, medications, illness, social/lifestyle factors, hair care, and more. As hair follicles weaken and stop producing hair, hair loss occurs.

What is Microneedling with PDGF Hair Restoration?

Microneedling with PDGF Hair Restoration is a safe, non-surgical treatment designed to naturally stimulate hair growth and revitalize the scalp. Using a specialized device, tiny micro-injuries are made in the scalp to activate the body’s healing response, increasing collagen production and blood flow to hair follicles. When paired with PDGF (Platelet-Derived Growth Factor)—a regenerative compound—the treatment helps awaken dormant follicles, support healthier hair growth, and improve long-term follicle function. It’s ideal for those in the early stages of hair thinning or loss and involves minimal downtime.

Most healthy individuals are great candidates, but there are some exceptions. Treatment is not recommended in areas with severe follicle depletion or for individuals with active infections, bleeding disorders, chronic liver disease, cardiovascular instability, or those undergoing anticoagulant therapy. Patients with chronic infectious diseases like HIV/AIDS or hepatitis should inform their provider in advance. Smokers and those recently treated with steroids may need additional sessions, as healing responses may be diminished.

What to Expect During Your Treatment

Micro-Needling is a comfortable, in-office, non-surgical procedure that takes about an hour start-to-finish. Most patients notice a brief period of inflammation during which their scalp remains somewhat pink and numb for a few hours. Swelling is rare (about 15% of the time) and if it occurs is noticeable in the forehead or around the eye area on the next day. Any swelling takes about a day or two to resolve.

Post Microneedling with PDGF Hair Restoration Treatment

There is no activity restriction after a Micro -Needling treatment. Patients may shower/shampoo/condition their hair normally just several hours after the treatment and resume normal daily and athletic activities. As mentioned previously, some brief mild inflammation noticeable as redness/pinkness and numbness of the scalp may be present for several hours. No harsh chemical coloring or perming treatments should be performed for at least 72 hours. Use of topical hair growth treatments like Nioxin or similar can resume the next day. Laser therapy treatments can also be resumed the next day.
