June is Acne Awareness Month
June is Acne Awareness Month, and here at Skinnovations we want to discuss ways to help you glow this summer! Acne affects over 85% of Americans at some point in their lives, and while it’s most common in teenagers or young adults, it can show up at any age.
This month is all about education & empowerment! Our goal is to fact-check the myths surrounding acne and equip you with the knowledge and tools to manage your breakouts effectively. Let's go over how acne occurs.
Understanding Acne
Acne occurs when clogged pores trap oil and dead skin cells, creating the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive. Here are some of the common culprits:
Hormonal fluctuations: This is why acne is often associated with puberty, but it can also flare up during menstruation, perimenopause, or pregnancy.
Genetics: If your parents had acne, you’re more likely to experience it too.
Diet: Sugary and processed foods can contribute to inflammation and worsening acne.
Stress: Feeling stressed? Cortisol, a stress hormone, can trigger breakouts.
Habits for Healthy Skin
While there’s no immediate fix, certain lifestyle habits can support your acne treatment plan and promote overall skin health:
Maintain a consistent skincare routine! Our experienced, top-notch providers at Skinnovations can help you perfect a regimen that works for your skin.
Don’t pick at or pop your pimples. This can worsen the inflammation and lead to permanent acne scarring.
Manage stress: Chronic stress and high cortisol levels can exacerbate acne. Explore relaxation techniques like yoga or a facial (we suggest taking advantage of our new hydrafacial with our clarifying serum to reduce oil and leave your skin clean and refreshed!)
Eat a balanced diet: Limit sugary and processed foods, and focus on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. We often recommend a Mediterranean diet with whole foods for glowing skin from the inside out.
Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water helps flush toxins and keeps your skin healthy. Try to avoid alcohol and other things that can contribute to dehydration.
Take Control: Treatment Options for Clear Skin
At Skinnovations, we have a variety of medical-grade skin care products and prescriptions to help get you on the path to clear skin! Our Skinnovations GLOW peel pads contain glycolic and salicylic acid to provide gentle surface exfoliation, regulate sebum production, and improve overall skin texture.
