Hello Sunshine, so glad you’re here!
May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month
As it starts to get warm out and feel like summer, Wisconsinites are prone to laying out in the sun after a long winter and getting sunburned! Sunburns accelerate skin aging and are a leading cause in the majority of cases of basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. Sunburns are bad news, but the good news is that they are totally preventable!
Steps to protect you and your family from sunburns and skin cancer:
Limit your time in the sun. UV rays are strongest between 10am-4pm. Take a break from the sun and spend time in the shade.
Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Apply and then reapply every 2 hours if out in the sun for extended periods.
Cover your skin when you can. Wear clothes that cover your skin when possible, and wear sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face and neck.
Avoid tanning beds at all costs! Tanning beds cause serious long-term skin damage and increase your risk of cellular senescent cells, premature aging, and skin cancer!
